Don`t forget the Blitz tournament at Ballynafeigh tomorrow. It is due to start at 12 noon.

SHE COULD HAVE MADE IT FOR FREE
What about this wee girl making a "music video" and paying chess players to take part in it?
Here is the appeal for chess players.
She could have come to the Ulster Bank Club, which is the venue of BSI or she could have come to Ballynafeigh Chess Club and the video would have bee made for free!
There is one born very minute.
Here is her video.
These women drove King Saul insane with jealousy with their music and singing.
1 Samuel 18:6+7
6. And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.
7. And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.

THE PLAN FOR ROOKIE`S RETURN
Suggestions, hints, pleas and gentle coaxing have been given to "Rookie" AKA Martin Kelly to take over the running of the BSI website. It is well known Martin has a treasure trove of archives from old Irish News Columns which would be interesting to see published.
Hopefully Rookie will set about the task in 2014.

ABBRIEVIATION
From now on I will be using the term BSI 1 to describe "Belfast South International."
Any subsequent teams will be designated BSI 2 and so on.
It saves time doing it this way.

THE NAIVE WORLD OF ULSTER CHESS
Quite a lot of heated and amusing discussion is talking place on various Ulster Chess websites about the league format and other related matters.
However a quick perusal of a few of the latest news items regarding government funding sheds a whole new light on the Ulster Chess scene. As you can see from the two news reports below, millions of pounds of government funding has been lavished on certain sporting set-ups, yet Ulster Chess gets nothing!
Irish Football Association gets £31 million. ????????
There is more!
Gaelic Athletic Association gets £61 million. ????????
Ulster Chess gets ZERO ??????????????????????
For the benefit of overseas readers I must point out that the local N.Ireland government is well known for lavishing large sums of money on undeserving and useless enterprises.
Even worse, there are a large number of useless individuals who are termed "Community Representatives," or "Community Activists," or even "Community Workers" who are plied with large sums of money just to keep them happy.
Most of these "Community Representatives" are too daft to play chess and have no interest in playing chess. What they do have is the expertise to intimidate and shakedown the government into providing them with cash.
The video clip below provides a satirical snapshot of the character exhibited by some of these "Community Activists."

If "Uncle Andy" started "The Knee-breakers Chess Club," "Red Hand Luke" started "The Red Hand Chess Club" and "Pastor Begbie" started the "Begbie Bishops Chess Club," they would be receiving government funding from all sources.
Pastor Begbie
Within a short space of time they would be the most well funded chess clubs in the whole of the UK. Within a couple of years the Ulster Chess Union would be the most prosperous Chess Union in the whole of the UK or even the whole of Europe!
The whole matter can be summed up like this;
The people who know how to shake down the government do not know how to play chess and furthermore have no interest in playing chess BUT the people who do know how to play chess do not know how to shake down the government!

BANGOR
Just found out last night that Bangor Chess Club has a Facebook page. Here is the link to it.
For those who are not from N.Ireland, you may like to know that Bangor is classified as one of those, "British picturesque sea-side towns."
It is situated in North Down which is one of the most desirable areas of the country.
Being N.Ireland, it will come as no surprise to find out Bangor Chess Club is not situated in Bangor, it is actually situated in Groomsport, a slightly smaller, "British picturesque sea-side town."

TONIGHT`S RESULT
Here is a short video clip taken just before the match started. My game with Paul was last finished so I never had the chance to film anymore.
The result of tonight`s postponed match was;
South Belfast 2 Bangor 3
South Belfast were fortunate to scrape two points, the defeat could have been heavier. Paul McLaughlin graciously offered me a draw when I had only seconds left on the clock.
Still two hard matches left to play, the first against Ballynafeigh 1 and the second is a re-arranged game against Lindores. Both matches are at home so Belfast South face 6 whites against four whites to finish the first half of the season.
Rookie will be publishing a full report of tonight`s match some time tomorrow.

LOOKING FOR A PRESENT FOR SOMEONE OR YOURSELF?
If you want to buy a present for Danny Mallaghan or Cahal Murphy you could try this. They both have been playing the Accelerated Dragon, I came across Cahal playing it last night during the South Belfast Monday tournament.
Personally speaking I have found this series by Victor Bologan very useful for learning to play the Open Sicilian as white. There is a lot of work involved you should be warned but the three videos probably lessens the workload considerably.

This is the position from my game with Damien. Black to move, sadly black missed Cunning Plan A and had to settle for Cunning Plan D, according to Rybka analysis.

I WAS CONNED
This is my game against my Fisherwick team mate Ian Woodfield. It was played on Wednesday night.
My opponent did not play his usual KIA commencing 1.Nf3.
I expected an open Sicilian with 3.d4
On move 23 I made a mistake which my opponent seized upon.
During the whole game I felt very uneasy as I had been lured into a setup I was unfamilar with. As a result I used up a lot of time. The last few moves are not recorded as I was in the last 5 minutes.
A nice win for Ian Woodfield, well played Ian.
Now I will have to ask Andrew Martin to bring out a DVD showing the best way to combat the King`s Indian Attack via an unexpected move order.
The moral of the story is; Beware of Ian Woodfield!

LAST GAME OF THE SEASON
Fisherwick 3 BSCC 2
And so the curtain comes down on the UCU 2012/13 season with a win for Fisherwick against their former sister club Malone, now BSCC.
For the second match in a row, Fisherwick stumble over the winning line against an understrength BSCC,having previously had a scare v Ballynafeigh 2 weeks ago. Martin Kelly remains undefeated against Fisherwick drawing again for the 3rd time.
John Masterson blunders a whole rook when he looked like winning his game and resigns immediately, Gavin Fong, the exchange up, gambles by giving the exchange back again in an attempt to push his passed pawn but miscalculates and cedes the draw.
The umbrella man, Ian Woodfield has a comfortable win and so to the final game on 1,with the match tied at 2-2 John Cairns isn't having it easy but finally crashes thru his opponents stubborn resistance by sac,ing a rook for a troublesome bishop thus securing the win and completing an undefeated season for Fisherwicks Invincibles.

Tied at 2-2, with just Rays game to finish,,Ray has a small material advantage, but 'blunders' a piece, then engineers a lovely swindle to turn the tables again, delivering a crushing win with less than 2 minutes on both clocks
Here is the first video clip showing the clocks being started before the Groomsport team arrived.

THIS IS IN RESPONSE TO A BEGGING LETTER
The following report is in response to a begging email I received earlier in the week. It relates to the recent E2E4 tournament in Dublin.
...........................................................................................................................................
THE "JOYCE"OF SPRING
At Easter in Dublin, Martin Kelly(Belfast South) followed up his 4/6 in the Gonzaga Under-1800s with 5/6 in the e2e4 Under-1750 Major.
He was unbeaten in the 9 round event. After a first round travelling bye, Kelly was full of the "joyce"of spring after a difficult draw with
Stephen Joyce. After a win and draw in the next two rounds,he was able to "waltz"past Cathal Walsh in Round Five in the game below:
In Round Six on Board Two,joint leader Ronan Murphy was "groanin' " after losing to Kelly in a swashbuckling, sacrificial game, not for the fainthearted.
The final round saw Kelly on Board One face last year's winner,Bulgarian Atanis Kouthev, nicknamed "Attack"or "Attila the Hun",who was a half point clear and needed only a draw to win.

ANOTHER CHESS BLOG AND REPORT ON MONDAY`S TOURNAMENT
Here is a link to David McCallister`s chess blog. It has a detailed report of Monday`s Rapid play tournament.
David also reveals the story about George Clooney and Jessica Alba was an "April Fool" hoax.
I did suspect quite a few MSM people were fooled, but they will never admit it. The information on the Ballynafeigh site seems to confirm this, if you can believe all it says??
Guess what? George Clooney has made it abundantly clear he will be nowhere near N.Ireland in August, he will be in Canada instead.

UCU RAPIDPLAY RESULTS
Yesterday`s Rapid play results are now available on the UCU website. The winner was my Fisherwick team mate John Masterson.
The runner up was my fellow Carl Frampton fan, Danny Mallaghan. Looks like there was a good turn out of 31 competitors for the event.
Here is the link to the UCU site.

Hi Everyone

Tournament winners : Sam Flanagan ,Cathal Murphy and Philip Morrison on
their performance. Also thanks to all those players ( 21 in total) who
participated in the event and to Drew Ferguson from the Ulster Chess

are interested in continuing the spirit of the event during April (and
while the Club is in contention for the Silver Kings Trophy) the Club

I would also like to
propose a meeting for members and supporters on Tuesday 30 April at 8pm in the Wellington Park Hotel. This will give an opportunity to hear how the the Club has progressed and help shape its future development.

WHAT AN AMAZING COINCIDENCE
One of my "dog walking friends" has lately taken to playing chess. He just happens to be a local actor! I thought he must have ulterior motives, perhaps he had been offered a role in a drama or a movie involving chess? He insists there is no ulterior motive he just finds it interesting.
This is the drama series in which he plays the role of "The Stranger." It was made by BBC but has not been shown yet. COAST
He and his wife were thrilled when I told them George Clooney and yer woman was wanting to play chess in Belfast. Though they found it hard to believe the rules cannot be changed just for some movie stars.
Matt is a Manchester United fanatic.

BIG DEAL?
Apparently a couple of "movie actors" want to play chess in the 2013 Ulster Championship, according to the Ballynafiegh website.
Overseas readers should note it is not a big deal for "movie stars" to be in N.Ireland, they make movies here continually so nobody is very impressed when they see any of these characters.
The Ulster Championship usually takes place in the Europa Hotel in August. I cannot really see the UCU changing the rules to let a couple of "actors" take part, can you? After all, "actors" spend their lives appearing to be what they are not, they are the experts at "deception." Potential candidates for chess cheating I would have thought?
Nevertheless here is as video clip of the Ulster Chess Championship from 2011 staged in the Europa Hotel, it will give you a flavour of the annual event. I have to apologize for the shaky camera at the start, I had only just got the thing and was learning how to work it.
UPDATE, I have just informed Nuala McKeever about this, she was talking about some guy called George Clooney a few weeks ago.

NIGEL SHORT; BELFAST CITY CENTER 6/3/2013
A big thank you and congratulations to the UCU and Nigel Short for arranging this splendid chess exhibition last night.
Well done also to INST for providing the venue and BBC N.Ireland for providing a short live coverage of the event.
Interestingly the local BBC covered the chess simul as both a news item AND a sports item!
Here is the video footage which I filmed.
The result was; Nigel Short 28 UCU 0

The Nigel Short simulatneous exhibition will take place tomorrow night at Inst in Belfast City Center. I am looking forward to seeing this, as I have never saw a simultaneous display before.

Hopefully the MSM will cover the event. Must let Nuala McKeever know, maybe she could come along and cover it for the Belfast Telegraph??
It will be in the Common room and starts at 6.45 pm. Should be over by about 7.30 pm lol lol
I have just informed Nuala via the comment section on her Belfast Telegraph column, no doubt she will be there!

AN UNEXPECTED TURN OF EVENTS
BSCC is presently second place in the first division. This is most unexpected development for a new Chess club which is less than a year old.
The latest result was a win against Bombardier in last night`s game. Dennis has provided the result, details and pictures.
BSCC 3.5 Shorts 1.5
BSCC make 'short' work of their opponents and have now won their first 3 matches in the second half of their campaign in Division 1 Can they maintain this form to mount a serious challenge to the runaway leaders Fisherwick??
Time will tell with 2 head to head matches between them to come, although it would seem that Fisherwick have such a huge points lead that it may be impossible to haul them in.
