Have just found the Ulster Chess Union has updated the website. It is very impressive and promises to provide online chess in the near future.

CHESS TRAINING GAME 1

This is a training position from a Chessbase Opening Encyclopedia. It gives the question; "Black`s King is still in the center, how can white exploit this?"

What makes it interesting is the fact the recommendations given when the game was published may not be the best according to the latest engines. So you have to work it out yourself.  It is not simply a "find mate in three or four" position.

White may have one or two best moves in every continuation!

The postion is from a real game but I have not given the players or location.

SHREDDER FOR MOBILE PHONE

After nearly two hours of cyberspace convulutions I am now in the process of downloading Shredder for Android phones. The product is from Chessbase.

My Android phone had to be linked first.

The game has installed successfully. It seems to start playing at 1200 then increase the playing strength if it looses. I do not know what its playing strength is supposed to be yet.

Just found out its top playing strength on my phone is 2473.

Things like this are most likely repsonsible for widespread cheating on the internet lol
Has anyone else one of these Android games?  It seems a very good game for just a few pounds!

THE INAUGURAL ULSTER BLITZ CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

The inaugural Ulster Blitz Chess Championship.  It takes place on Tuesday 27th December 2011 9.30am to 6.00pm at Belfast Boat Club.

Unfortunately I cannot take part in the event as my day time activity involves exercising my German friend twice a day.

Match report
ROOKIE RIDES AGAIN

It took three seasons after 5 consecutive 5-2 defeats, but at last Malone beat Bangor in the UCU League on 8/12/11. Despite those defeats, Malone had won UCU League Division Two in the last two campaigns. How ironic it would be if Bangor go on to win it this season.

Groomsport was the windswept setting for the match and Bangor got "the wind up" when captain Martin Kelly's favourite Vienna Gambit "waltzed" to victory against young "ashen-faced" Ashley McWhinney. The 2011 Henderson Cup winner was able to "make winning" moves against McWhinney as shown below.

R. Proctor "gambled" and lost to J. Bryars, while D. Ruben avoided a "drubbing" by drawing against P. McLaughlin. P. McGuigan said "play it again, Sam" after beating Sam Flanagan to keep Bangor's hopes alive but it was "alan a day's work" for Stephen Morgan as he clinched victory for himself and Malone against Alan McConnell! The final score was Bangor 1.5-Malone 3.5.
